Jason Expedition

A fascinating connection is made between youngsters studying science and actual scientists and researchers working on a specific topic during the school year. Produced by Dr. Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the Titanic and other historical wrecks.

Illinois Science Teachers Awards

Annual series of awards for the top elementary school science teacher in each of the seven ISTA districts.

Building a Presence for Science

Major national sponsor and Illinois sponsor of this program that builds a network of key leaders in schools to gather and share best practices from other school systems. This is a $6 million multi-year sponsorship by ExxonMobil coordinated with the National Science Teachers Association.

Phil Mickelson Science and Math Academy

An ExxonMobil program designed to bring 200 elementary school science teachers together for a weeklong seminar on innovative teaching practices.

Hispanic Heritage Youth Award for Engineering and Mathematics

National competition to recognize the top Hispanic high school students among 13,000 participants. Since becoming a sponsor in 2001, the company has contributed more than $1 million in support of the HHYA’s goals.

Secrets in Science

A new program connecting ExxonMobil engineers with local 8th grade students to create enthusiasm and passion for science and math. The program will focus on hands-on experiments done by the students while explaining the fundamentals that make it work.

Refinery Tours, Career Days, Classroom Presentations

ExxonMobil personnel participate in a wide variety of school programs designed to bring the real world of work to local students. Topics range from what it takes to work in a refinery from an education and knowledge perspective, to the basics of how a refinery works and what the oil industry is all about.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

National program to encourage young women to pursue technical careers. Entails job shadowing and presentations by young women engineers to likely student candidates identified by teachers. This will be a national XOM event in the Spring semester 2008.

Science Ambassadors

ExxonMobil engineers bring fun and educational science experiments into the classroom to engage young students’ interest in math and science. These organized real world experiments and hands-on learning experiences include areas of geology, oceanography, natural resources, etc.

Partners in Education

Refinery employees (and annuitants) will be encouraged to form teams of volunteers (minimum of at least five employees and/or annuitants for each school) to provide services at local schools where they have a particular affinity (children attending, etc.). ExxonMobil Public Affairs will provide $2500 to each group as seed money the first year with supplemental funding coming from the VIP Individual and Team grant programs for up to $15,000 available to each school.
